Helping Columbus City School Students Enter and Succeed in College

Financial Aid

Going to college can be an expensive proposition, but I Know I Can is here to help you get every dollar available to make college affordable.  I Know I Can College Advisors offer guidance and assistance in obtaining, selecting and completing all financial aid forms.

Where do I start?
In order to be eligible for financial aid, you MUST first complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  1. Visit pin.ed.gov to apply for the PIN (Personal Identification Number) that you will need to use as an electronic signature on your FAFSA.  Both you and your parent(s) will receive a four digit number.  Write this down somewhere safe.
  2. After receiving your PIN, visit fafsa.ed.gov to complete your FAFSA. (This application cannot be accessed or filed prior to January 1.)
I Know I Can offers FREE workshops to help you and your family complete the FAFSA. For a workshop schedule, E-Mail Us or check with your high school guidance counselors.

What types of financial aid are available to me?
Now that you've completed the FAFSA, let's take a look at what types of financial assistance exist.
  • Scholarships
    • These are applied for and awarded on the basis of merit, skill and unique characteristics. You do not pay this money back, however, most scholarships require that you maintain a certain level of achievement.
Visit our list of available scholarships.
  • Grants
    • Usually awarded on the basis of financial need.  You do not pay this money back.
  • Work-Study
    • Allows you to earn a paycheck by working a limited number of hours throughout the school year at the college you attend.
  • Loans
    • Many students and parents borrow money to help pay educational expenses.  Think of loans as an investment in your future.  Loans must be repaid with interest, usually after your education is completed.
