Summer Scholars

Do you want to get a taste of college before it's time to go? If you answered yes, we have the perfect opportunity for you!

I KNOW I CAN's Summer Scholars program provides Columbus City School District students the opportunity to spend a summer of learning and discovery on a college campus. These programs enable students to experience college life, participate in educational activities and learn more about themselves.

Summer Scholar participants are identified with the help of guidance counselors and classroom teachers. Students are selected for talent in a specific area as well as high achievement across all curriculum areas.

Financial assistance and application fee waivers are available. The Summer Scholar grants are given to award individual excellence and initiative. Preference for grants is given to students whose family incomes would preclude their attendance at such institutions.

Summer Scholar Guidelines
    1. Applicants must be current students in the Columbus City School District having completed grades 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, or 12.
    2. Students must apply to the specific program(s) by the deadline date(s) established, which is usually some time in April. A copy of their application must be on file at the I KNOW I CAN office as well.
    3. Students must complete an I KNOW I CAN Summer Scholars grant application by the deadline date established. Students must provide documentation of financial information when requested.
    4. Students must apply for any need-based aid or scholarship assistance available for their specific program(s). I KNOW I CAN will assist students with this process.
    5. Students must meet the grade point requirement of the specific program(s).
    6. I KNOW I CAN may pay any application fee associated with the program(s).
    7. The maximum Summer Scholars award will be $650*. Students will be eligible to have all, half, or just application fees paid based on the family's gross adjusted income. Income limits will be set annually and based on funds available.
    8. The types of program funded will be primarily restricted to academic enrichment programs located on college campuses. Programs approved for funding will be decided by staff. All staff decisions will be final.
