Summer Programs Give Academic Leaders
a Competitive Edge

As school lets out each summer, more than 300 Columbus Public School students are on their way to take more classes. These courses that take place on college campuses nationwide give students early exposure to college and a competitive edge when competing with others for college admissions. Summer Scholars explain why their experiences were so valuable.

Evans
Brookhaven High School
Junior Scholars at Miami University

"I learned a lot of things that I have not learned in high school yet. I got to talk to people who have had experience in the kind of major I would like to take during college and that really helped me a lot. Moving to another level of education is not as easy as you think it is. Without the Summer Scholars program I wouldn't have known much about college."

Erik
Briggs High School
Shawnee State University's
Entrepreneurship

"The Entrepreneurship program showed me that you have to work hard for what you want. My partner and I put a lot of work into our project, which was putting together a business plan for a coffee house. We stayed at the computer lab until almost 10 p.m. one evening. It showed that college is not going to be easy.

I've always been interested in business. I owned my own lawn mowing company for awhile, and my goal is to start my own business after college."

Ashley
West High School
Maine Maritime Academy Summer Sea Session

"Without the Summer Scholars program I wouldn't have learned more about the careers I am interested in. At the Maine Maritime Academy I studied ocean navigation, oceanographic sampling, cold water ocean survival and sailing. Besides the classes, the program showed me what college life is like, everything from living in a dorm to having to be places on time."

Matthew
Northland High School
Ohio University's Minority Males in Engineering Technology (MENT)

"The Minority Males in Engineering Technology was a two-week camp filled with classes and activities dealing with the different fields of engineering. Educationally I learned a lot. I also learned what is like to stay in a college dorm and that you can't stay up late and then expect to sleep late. We woke up early everyday and had classes that kept our minds going. I plan on going to college and am considering majoring in civil engineering construction. This program has prepared me for college."
