Deciding to go to college is only the first step. Now you have to prepare. And it's never too early to get ready. Whether you are a high school freshman or senior, you can make attending college a goal and a reality.

What Colleges Look For In Prospective Students:

Academic Record:


Breadth and diversity of courses; difficulty of courses.
Grades:



Consistent performance; reflect potential achieved; if not good initially, significant improvement should have been made.
Class Rank:


Consider the academic standing of a student in relation to other members of his/her class
Standardized Test Scores:

Colleges look at them in terms of ranges.
Out-of-Class Activities:



Look for depth of involvement, initiative, creativity demonstrated in activities, community service or work.
Recommendations:

Most colleges require a recommendation from the high school guidance counselor. Some ask for references from a teacher or another adult.

College Interview:

Required by most colleges with highly selective admission procedures.
