Frequently Asked Questions
Don't think you can afford college?
Think again.

If you and your parents can't afford college there are solutions. Financial aid is available to help meet your family's needs. And I KNOW I CAN offers grant assistance to qualified graduates of the Columbus City School District. So don't let finances stop you from making the move to college. For specific answers to your financial questions, visit http://studentaid.ed.gov/PORTALSWebApp/students/english/index.jsp

If you are not a student of the Columbus Public School District, the Ohio College Access Network www.ohiocan.org can provide you with a name of a program in your area that can help open the door to affording a post-secondary education

Types of Financial Aid
Financial aid is help for meeting college costs, both direct educational costs (tuition, fees, books, etc.) and personal living expenses (food, housing, transportation, etc.). Donít rule out any college that interests you because of costs alone. Financial aid is available for qualified participants.

There are four basic types of financial assistance. Part or all of these may be offered in a financial package:
1. Scholarships:Based on academic excellence. Repayment not required.
2. Grants: Given for athletic, academic, or special talent potential and/or need. Repayment is not required.
3. College Work-Study Program: Federally sponsored program that enables colleges to hire students for employment. Students work a limited number of hours throughout the school year.
4. Loans: Student loans have lower interest rates, and they may be college sponsored, federally sponsored, or available through commercial financial institutions. Loans must be repaid.

I KNOW I CAN volunteer advisors offer guidance and assistance in applying and obtaining appropriate financial aid that may be available to you. Other sources of information include your high school guidance counselor and the financial aid office at the university you are interested in attending.

Financial Aid Process
Completing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal StudentAid) is the first step in the financial aid process. You can get this application, as well as eligibility and deadline information, by visiting www.fafsa.ed.gov Also, be sure to check with your financial aid office to verify your deadline.www.clas.ufl.edu/CLAS/american-universities.html

Note: you must fill out the FAFSA to be eligible for the I KNOW I CAN Last Dollar grant.

Highly competitive and selective colleges may require you to also complete the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE. Ohio schools that require the PROFILE include Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland Institute of Music, Kenyon College and Oberlin College.  www.collegeboard.com

Financial Aid Workshops

We can help you take the first step in the right direction. In order to be considered for federal student aid, as well as I KNOW I CAN's Last Dollar Grant, you must complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). We understand that this application can be confusing. So each February we hold workshops where our volunteers provide one-on-one attention and help you and your parents complete the necessary forms.
