FAFSA
Completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the first step in the financial aid process. Here's how:
- Apply for a Personal Identification Number (PIN) at pin.ed.gov. Both you and one parent will need one. It will be used on the FAFSA as an electronic signature.
- Get your FAFSA at fafsa.ed.gov
- Contact your I Know I Can College Advisor for help with completing the application or attend one of our free workshops in January and February. Volunteers and staff members will be there to assist you. View our Calendar to see the official workshop dates and time.
It's a much easier process if you come prepared. These are the documents you and your parents will need to complete the application:
- Students
- Social Security Number
- Alien Registration Number (non U.S. citizens)
- Driver's License Number
- Previous Year's W-2 (for every job worked in 2009)
- Previous Year's Federal Tax Return (1040, 1040A, 1040EZ)
- Records of additional money earned
- Current Bank Statements
- Parents
- Social Security Number(s)
- Previous Year's W-2 (for every job worked that year)
- Previous Year's Federal Tax Return (1040, 1040A, 1040EZ)
- Records of additional money earned
- Untaxed Income Records (Social Security, TANF, Welfare, Worker's Comp.)

**Note: Do not wait to submit the FAFSA. Even if you are waiting to file your tax return, you may use the most recent documents to file the FAFSA now and meet deadlines, then update the FAFSA once you have received the new forms.
